The co-chairs of the Research Priority Team 3 for the International Conference on Arctic Research Planning (ICARP) IV invite input via their survey, Understanding the Dynamics and Resilience of Arctic Social-Ecological Systems to Foster a Sustainable Future. The overarching aim of this project is to develop a benchmarking report to be used to track a) ‘where we are at’ and b) ‘what we want to achieve’ within Research Priority Team 3’s theme.
This document will assist in evaluating our achievements throughout the next decade, at the end of this decade, and can serve to spur adaptation in our focus areas along the way. The approach involves integrating iterative feedback from stakeholders and rightsholders participating in formal and informal focus groups, workshops, and through this two-part survey. Interested participants are currently being asked to participate in the first round of the survey which aims to more clearly establish; a) key knowledge gaps, and b) research priority areas for team 3, which is focused on understanding the dynamics and resilience of Arctic social-ecological systems to foster a sustainable future. By contributing their knowledge to this study, participants will be supporting the development of the International Arctic Science Committee's (IASC) research strategy for the next decade.
The goal of IASC's ICARP IV is to identify desired outcomes and knowledge gaps and related research priorities for Arctic research for 2025-2035. There are seven themes for Arctic research, each of which has a team associated with it. Each of the seven teams is taking different approaches to fill knowledge gaps and advance key scientific understanding. Two important tasks for each of these groups are to; 1) identify existing knowledge gaps within the thematic areas, and 2) identify research priority areas for the next 10 years that could elevate identified knowledge gaps.
Survey Round One (Fall 2024) will ask participants to share their opinions on 1) what knowledge gaps related to this theme exist, 2) what research areas should be prioritized to fill identified gaps, and 3) some basic information about them. You can take the survey here until 12 December 2024.
