The International Arctic Science Committee will participate today in the Arctic Circle Berlin Forum (7-8 May, Berlin, Germany) with the session Defining Priorities for Arctic Research and International Cooperation for the Next Decade: From ICARP IV to IPY 5. The Arctic Circle Berlin Forum, hosted by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and co-organized with the German Arctic Office at the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, will explore the roles of Science, Climate, Policies, and Europe in the future of the Arctic.

The breakout session Defining Priorities for Arctic Research and International Cooperation for the Next Decade: From ICARP IV to IPY 5  will highlight the progress of the ICARP IV process as well as the key steps in the planning process and visions for the 5th IPY.

International cooperation and coordination of prioirities are vital for research in the Arctic to understand and effectively respond to the climate crisis and other changes in the Arctic. From 2022 to 2026, the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) in cooperation with many partners worldwide, is organising the decadal Arctic research planning process International Conference on Arctic Research Planning (ICARP) for the fourth time. ICARP IV is a community-wide undertaking and brings together Arctic researchers, Indigenous Peoples, policy makers, residents and stakeholders from all countries engaged in Arctic research to considers the most urgent knowledge gaps and research priorities for the next decade, to explore avenues to address and implement these research needs, and to identify opportunities to enhance synergies that might exist across existing research plans, or where there is potential for formalising new alliances and collaborative partnerships. The outcomes of the ICARP IV process will provide the foundation for developing the Arctic research goals for the 5th International Polar Year (IPY) 2032-33.

Speaker for this session will be:  Volker Rachold, German Arctic Office, on The impact and legacy of the 4th International Polar Year, Gerlis Fugmann, Executive Secretary, International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) on The International Conference on Arctic Research Planning Process (ICARP IV), and Henry Burgess, President, International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) / NERC Arctic Office, UK: Planning the 5th International Polar Year 2032-33.  After the presentations, the session will seek input from the audience on both initiatives.
